Christmas Bazaar 15-12-2019

After all the rain and storm on Saturday the weather on Sunday was lovely. A perfect day for our Christmas Bazaar.
The fact that the Women's Club To Palataki moved their event from Saturday to Sunday only made it better. Together we formed a nice attraction for all visitors.

And we raised a wonderful € 551,00 for the animals!

We thank Taverna Stelios for using his place, Hakuna Matata for lending us his grill, Jackie for making beautiful handmade products, Jürgen for donating and selling the glühwein, Gitti for making and selling waffles, Arno for grilling the sausages and Petra for organising it all.

And of course we thank all the other stand holders and the people who visited us.

We hope to see you next year again!

7 new puppies

A young man was jogging up the mountain in Potamia, when he saw a ripped open plastic bag with 7 very young puppies. Since he was on foot he couldn't take them with him. As soon as he could he called us and asked for help.

It was already getting dark, so we contacted Philip who lives in the area and asked if he could go with the young man to the place where he saw them and keep the puppies overnight. And so he did.
They were very lucky because the same night it started to rain and there was snowfall in the mountains. No way they would have survived that.
The next day Philip brought them to Kalivia where Tanja took them over.
They are 4 boys and 3 girls, approximately 10 days old.

Bottle feeding 7 puppies is quite a job, so if anyone on the island is willing to foster 2 or more of them, that would be a great help.
Also any donation, big or small, will be very helpful, thinking of 7x flea and worm treatment, vaccinations, microchip, etc.

Heavy rain

At 21st and 22nd November and again at 25th Thassos had to deal with very heavy rain. Large parts of the island were flooded and a lot damaged. We don't want to think how many animals got killed in the massive mud streams...

For Sophia, who takes care of the dogs in the HalfWayHouse, it was almost impossible to reach the shelter to feed them. But she didn't give up and got there and to her relieve she saw that they were fine. For a week the dirt road up there could not be used by car, so she had to walk every day.

But today the road was fixed so life for her, and the sheperds who have to take care of their animals, will be much easier now.

Car Boot Sale 19-10-2019

Last Saturday we had a lovely day at the Car Boot Sale in Limenas!

The weather was perfect, we met a lot of people and we raised € 290,- by selling our hand made products like cushions and cards, coffee and cake, second hand goods and clothes. Together with the donations of € 80,- we made a € 370,-.

A lot of bills has to be paid for food, vet, sterilisations etc. So thanks everybody for organizing, helping and spending!

Castration project

The end of September there was a castration project lon the island and it was a huge success.
In 4 days 224 cats and 11 dogs were castrated!
Stray cats from all over the island were caught and brought to the vet clinic of Lovolina in Potamia or Giannis in Limenaria.
We want to say a big thank you to all the people who helped catching cats, lending us their cat boxes or helping in the vet clinics.

But a very special THANK YOU goes to:
* Zoi Kontou of ΠΑΝΕΛΛΑΔΙΚΗ ΦΙΛΟΖΩΙΚΗ ΚΑΙ ΠΕΡΙΒΑΛΛΟΝΤΙΚΗ ΟΜΟΣΠΟΝΔΙΑ (pfpo.gr) who organised it all
* The Municipality for their cooperation
* Konstantin, Lilly and Sakis, the team of Vets in Action, who worked hours sustained
* Lovolina and Giannis for providing their clinic, and not being able to do their normal work
* Christos who came all the way from Thessaloniki with loads of boxes and caught a lot of wild cats

We are aware of the fact that some people are disappointed that the cats in their neighbourhood couldn’t be done. But this a project that takes time and step by step we will get there.
Let’s hope the volunteer vets can come back to Thassos soon.

SPONSOR ONE OF OUR ANIMALS

Like all charities we are struggling with money all the time. But at the same time we want to give our animals the best possible care. And that costs money, every month again.

With a sponsor for each animal under our care, we would be sure that the basic costs such as food, worm / flea treatment and vaccinations are covered.

You can sponsor food for € 10 - € 15 per month.
For € 15 - € 20 per month you sponsor food and worm / flea treatment.
For € 20 - € 25 per month you sponsor food, worm / flea treatment and vaccinations.

You are of course free to choose a higher amount. Or form a sponsorship with friends or family or collegues!Your money is always well spent, there are so many street animals that need care.

Below you see the pictures of some of the animals in our care. You can support them with a monthly donation on our PayPal account or bank account. Please pick the animal of your choice and send us an email (act.thassos@gmail.com) with the name of the animal, the amount and the way of payment.

The animals won’t mind if they have more than one sponsor, they would be honored ;)

7 new puppies

Recently 7 puppies came into our care.

With no money (or even worse, outstanding bills) we are facing huge costs to give these little creatures what they need: 7x worm/flea treatment, 7x vaccinations, 7x microchips and not to mention the food.

The total costs will be about € 500!

So we started a fundraise.
Please help if you can. Donate, share the  Fundrazr post, share the pictures of the babies to find them a home. Every little bit helps.

Thanks!

End of an era...

It was not entirely unexpected, but it still came as a shock when Klaus and Claudia informed us that they really have to end our cooperation.
And they didn't decide that easily, but with pain in their hearts. For years they have mediated in finding a good home for the dogs of Thassos, but now it is coming to an end for health reasons.

https://www.wuestenwolf.de/?p=16830

Dear Klaus and Claudia, we thank you with all our heart for your tireless dedication, endless time, often also expences, and all the good care for the dogs of Thassos. Now it's time to think about yourself and your health and  enjoy the years ahead.

It is clear that this is a major loss for ACT. Actually most dogs found their way to a home via Klaus and Claudia.
So we are now eagerly looking for new opportunities for collaboration. So if you know an organisation or person who could help us with this, PLEASE PLEASE contact us. Without on-site help, it is much more difficult to provide the right (after) care and without homing dogs we will not be able to accommodate new dogs that need our help so badly.

Wintertime quiet? No not really!

Never a dull moment in animal care.

In the first months 3 new dogs came in: Quinny, Salomon and Tosca.
They all need their first vet check, worm and flea treatment, vaccinations and castration.
Meanwhile Tosca is castrated, Quinny has an appointment on Thursday and Salomon will be done next week. Earlier we had Olga, Nora, Jeanie and Kostaki castrated. That needed a bit more organisation because the nights were still very cold, so we had to find them a foster for a couple of days.
Seven castrations is about € 700 so we were glad that we received a generous donation for food and medical care from the Dutch organisation Wereldasielen last year to cover the costs.

Some repairs were made at the HalfWayHouse and at the same time new stone dog houses with a ridge at the front were made in the old part of the enclosure. What’s the use of straw to keep them warm if it is all over the place. This way it will stay inside where it belongs.

Jutta from Germany contacted us to ask if we could use medical stuff like bandages. Well, yes of course! She has already sent a few parcels, also with beautiful handmade items to sell on the bazar.

In February we had our first pub quiz in restaurant Oneiro Zoïs in Dasilio Prinos. We had great fun and collected more than € 300.

In January Petra flew Bobby to his new family in Germany. In the winter it is hard to find flight escorts, we found a cheap ticket, so we brought him ourselves. Another happy dog and a happy family.

Also Lord and Nora found a new family and they will travel soon.
